The known devices for two-sided coating of material webs, in particular paper webs, for alternative operation as a gluing press or as a spreading device have two adjacently arranged pressing rollers, one of which can be pivoted against the other, guide rollers which guide the material web in gluing press operation through the pressing nip between the two pressing rollers, an application and metering system which can be pivoted against a pressing roller outside the pressing nip, and guide rollers which guide the web into the region between said pressing roller and the application and metering system, the web being deflected by the pressing roller. According to the invention, one pressing roller (3) has a very hard surface and the other pressing roller (2) has a soft surface, and an application and metering system (12) is assigned only to the pressing roller (2) with the soft surface. A second spreading device with a counter roller (13) and an application and metering system (14) follows the pressing rollers (2, 3) on the web outlet side. <IMAGE>
