The vibrating element is formed around its forward end with an annular edged portion including one or more concentric steps. Each step defines an edge having the same diameter. The shape of the edged portion is not limited to that of a circle. The width and length of each groove forming the steps is such that the edge causes the fuel to flow in the form of a film. As the fuel is fed to the edged portion, the stream of fuel is severed and atomised at each edge due to the vertical vibrations imparted to the vibrating element. Fuel is first partially atomised at the edge of the first step and the excess portion is fed further over the second step and similarly over steps.
