Removing sludge from collected combustion fume washing - using inclined enclosed worm feeding with stoppages to permit drainage

Sludge-bearing washing water from combustion fumes cleansing plant, e.g. in power stations or refuse incinerators, is collected in a tank and constantly stirred to cause agglomeration of small particles. Sludge is removed from the tank floor by the lower end of a screw conveyor (31) rising in an enclosing tubular housing (27), and driven by an upper end motor (15). Conveyor feed is only intermittent, providing intervals between the movements during which water can drop back towards the tank (11). From the top of the screw, made esp. of stainless steel strip, the part dried sludge lumps (13) drop into a collector. To avoid the screw being blocked, the turns are only attached to the core at every tenth layer, providing internal flexiblity. Pref. the lower end of the conveyor casing is somewhat belled to aid entry. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for relatively small capacity plant. The relatively dry sludge is easily disposed of.
