PURPOSE:To enhance an accuracy in positioning the head of an ink sheet and detect the residual amount of an ink by providing marks each of which indicates the color of an ink by the position thereof set in the width direction of the ink sheet, positioning the head of each color ink part of the sheet based on a mark reading signal, and detecting the longitudinal position of the ink sheet. CONSTITUTION:At each boundary part 20 between adjacent color ink parts of an ink sheet 14 coated dividedly with color inks, a mark 22 is provided for indicating the color or the residual amount of the relevant ink by the position thereof set in the width direction of the sheet 14, and a reading sensor 26 is provided in the direction of paying-out of the sheet 14. While a recording paper 18 is passed repeatedly between a thermal head 16 and a platen 30 and, simultaneously, the ink sheet 14 is fed, the mark 22 is read by the sensor 26 to position the head of a desired color ink part of the sheet 14, and feeding of the sheet 14 is stopped at that position. Next, thermal transfer recording is conducted on the paper 18. While thermal transfer recording is conducted sequentially for each color, the marks 22 provided in plurality in the width direction of the sheet are detected, and the residual amount of each ink is detected from the longitudinal direction of the ink sheet 14. |
