PURPOSE:To provide stable dot reproduction properties free of formation of voids in image areas and provide linear gradation characteristics by providing an intermediate layer between a thermoplastic ink layer and a support layer to produce a thermal transfer ink medium with an at least three-layer structure. CONSTITUTION:An intermediate layer 103 which comprises a thermoplastic or thermosetting organic substance and an inorganic substance and the surface of which has a rugged structure comprises gaps not greater than 20mum is provided between a support layer 102 and a thermoplastic ink layer 104 to produce a thermal transfer ink medium 101. The structure enhances adhesion of the ink layer 104. The rugged structure of the intermediate layer 103 is formed under the effect of particles of the inorganic substance. The thermoplastic or thermosetting organic substance constituting the intermediate layer may be, for example, butyral, a polyester, polystyrene, polypropylene or polyurethane. |
