An electromagnetic drive for a control element (1) having a reciprocating actuating shaft (2) comprises an electric driving motor (5), a screw and nut transmission comprising a spindle (9) and a nut (10) with rolling elements (11) in the thread, a free-wheel clutch (7) connecting the driving motor (5) to the screw and nut transmission (9-11), a restoring spring (17) acting on the actuating shaft and mounting means (3) adapted to be connected to the control element and carrying the screw and nut transmission (9-11), the driving motor (5) and an abutment (18) for the restoring spring. A non-locking reduction gear (4) can be arranged between the clutch (7) and driving motor (5).
