A barrel segment (30) in or for a multiple inter-meshing screw extruding machine has intersecting bore (104, 106) for accommodating the screws and comprises a first (110) heat transfer fluid conducting path adjacent the exterior surface of the barrel segment, and one or more second heat transfer fluid conducting paths (86, 88) situated radially inwardly of the first heat transfer fluid conducting path, in barrel regions of cusp like cross section defined between the bars. The conducting paths may be supplied with the fluid by the same circulation system. The external path may comprise an externally flattened tube located within a helical barrel groove, and may be surrounded by barrel heaters (39).
