The invention relates to an adhesive paste for protecting the skin, to a process for preparing it, to its therapeutic applications, in particular its use in surgery, especially in ostomies, and pharmaceutical compositions containing it. In the protective adhesive paste according to the invention, comprising at least one agent which swells in water, at least one protective agent, at least one adhesive agent and at least one solvent, the agent which swells in water is chosen from the group comprising an insolubilised carboxymethylcellulose and a cross linked polyvinylpyrrolidone, the protective agent is pectin, the adhesive agent is chosen from the group comprising poly(vinyl ethyl ether)s and acrylic polymers and the solvent is chosen from the group comprising ethanol, isopropanol, water and ethyl acetate, and the paste optionally comprises, in addition, an agent for strengthening cohesion, chosen from the group of acrylic polymers.
