By means of a method for safeguarding a high-pressure water electrolysis system containing an electrolytic cell block and oxygen separators and hydrogen separators which are arranged at a higher level than the block, in terms of the direction of gravity, a solution is to be provided by means of which the costs of safeguarding the high-pressure water electrolysis are changed, the safety required can be achieved thanks to simple means, and by means of which the operation of electrolytic cells at atmospheric pressure is made possible. This is achieved by the electrolytic cell block having a pressurised fluid, which is held at a higher pressure than the internal pressure of the electrolytic cells, flow round it within a pressure-proof casing. <IMAGE>
