A logitudinal magnetic coated recording medium is produced by the stages of: preparing a magnetic paint of planar magnetic particles respectively having an easy magnetisation axis perpendicular to a planar surface, coating a nonmagnetic substrate with the magnetic paint, forming a magnetic film, applying magnetic field parallel to the surface of magnetic film and drying the magnetic paint while applying magnetic field.
