<p>In the area of analog to digital conversion, the performance parameters of speed, resolution and component cost are the primary design tradeoffs. The present invention provides improvements on these design tradeoffs in an analog to digital converter including an integrator (42) for producing an output signal and having an input (-), a connection (24) for an input signal (Vin) to the integrator (42) input (-), and a controller (16) for periodically applying a reference signal (Ref. 1, Ref. 2) to the integrator input for causing the integrator output signal to have a predetermined average value, for measuring the amount of time that the reference is applied to the integrator input, and for calculating a digital representation of the analog signal. The primary applications of the present invention are in the areas of low cost and high resolution analog to digital converters.</p> |
