A diagram of the steering system with gear ratio varying as a function of the speed DDVV-C4 appears in figure 3: on turning the steering wheel the thrust rod 4 is displaced laterally, causing the arm 1 to turn, which in turn displaces the steering tie rod 5 laterally, finally turning the wheels. When the centre of rotation 2 is very close to the thrust rod 4 then a small movement of the steering wheel causes a large movement of the wheels and the steering will be very high geared. When the centre of rotation 2 is far from the thrust rod 4 it will be necessary to turn the steering wheel more to obtain a small movement of the wheels and the steering will be lower geared. By moving the arm 1 vertically by means of the hydraulic system as a function of the speed (or any other parameter), a variable geared steering is obtained.
