The invention relates to the biological purification of waste water (effluent) by the activated sludge process, the activation tank, which is constructed as a tower- or shaft-type vertical reactor being furnished with growth supports for increasing the biomass concentration. Better utilisation of the available oxygen supply is to be achieved. According to the invention, in a vertical reactor, comprising a shaft and a central pipe, growth supports are arranged as flow baffles on the central pipe. The flow baffles effect an intensified mixing in the upflow region and thus a breaking up of macro flocs and an improved oxygen utilisation.
