PURPOSE:To enable inexpensive and stable production of terpinolene using no toxic substance without formation of waste water by isomerizing limonene with a zirconium oxide catalyst which is heat-treated in air and bears sulfate ions. CONSTITUTION:In the production of terpinolene [1,4(8)-p-menthadiene] by isomerization of limonene (such as d-limonene from natural orange oil), zirconium oxide bearing sulfate groups heat treated in air is used as a catalyst. The catalyst has stabilized activity and prepared by dipping Zr(OH)4 which is obtained by hydrolysis of a Zr compound such as ZrOCl2.8H2O, in an aqueous solution containing SO4<-2> such as aqueous sulfuric acid and heat-treating the product at 200 to 800 deg.C. The isomerization reaction is conducted at 20 to 180 deg.C for 0.5 to 30 hours. Terpinolene is used as a raw material of synthetic perfumes and a radical polymerization controller. |
