TITLE OF INVENTION New process for the production of L-2-amino-4-(hydroxymethylphosphinyl)-butyric acid A known herbicidal compound, L-2-amino-4- (hydroxymethylphosphinyl)-butyric acid can be produced by a new process comprising transaminating 4 (hydroxymethylphosphinyl)-2-oxo-butyric acid by reacting it with fumaric acid and ammonium ion in the presence of an aspartase and a transaminase which are produced by a microorganism capable of producing both said aspartase and transaminase, or alternatively in the presence of cells of said microorganism or a purified or partially purified enzyme preparation as prepared from said cells and containing the aspartase and transaminase.
