PURPOSE:To prevent flocculation of fine particles by providing intermediate electrodes between display-side electrodes and rear-side electrodes and applying alternating voltages across the intermediate and rear-side electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Intermediate electrode 18 made of metallic plates and having a mesh or slit structure are provided between display-side and rear-side electrodes 11 and 13 and the metallic plates of the electrodes 18 are formed by a pressing or etching process. Alternating voltages which are excited at a low frequency are applied across the intermediate and rear-side electrodes. When the alternating voltage are applied, fine particles which usually flocculate on the rear-side electrodes tend to float between the rear-side and intermediate electrodes. Since the low-frequency excitation moves the fine particles between the rear-side and intermediate electrodes, the fine particles do not flocculate in the vicinity of the rear-side electrode. Thus flocculation of the fine particles can be prevented and a uniform display can be obtained. |
