PURPOSE:To enable sterilization of lactoferrin in a state of maintained physiological functionality thereof without forming precipitates by regulating the ionic strength of an aqueous solution of the lactoferrin within a specific range. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of lactoferrin is thermally sterilized. In the process, the ionic strength of the aqueous solution is regulated under conditions expressed by the formula (T is temperature deg.C) and then sterilized. The lactoferrin is an iron-binding milk protein and has various physiological activities, such as bacteriostatic action on pathogenic bacteria, differentiation regulating action on leukocytes, sterilizing power enhancing action, propagating action on lymphocytes and iron absorption regulating action, and is utilizable also as food materials. The concentration of the aqueous solution of lactoferrin may be high. In this case, the solution is desalted to provide an ionic strength (I) corresponding to the conditions expressed by the formula and regulated. |
