Filter apparatus for continuously filtering fluids containing large amounts of particles, including large amounts of ultrafine particles. The filter apparatus includes filter media and a backwash system which continuously removes deposited filtrate from an inlet side of the filter media. The filter apparatus also includes means for at least temporarily retaining filtered fluid in an outlet chamber of the apparatus at a location immediately proximate an outlet side of the filter media, such that backwashing of the filter means occurs as soon as filtered fluid passes through the filter means. |
