Laterally-spaced compacting plates (1) on a transverse shaft (2) are mounted in a rear loading opening (4) of a vehicle, the opening having an articulated, curved, lower part (5) that is spring loaded (7). The part (5) moves against the spring loading (7) when the excess of detritus being compacted blocks the compacting plates (1). The blades (1) pass through fixed cleaning forks (8) (Fig. 3, not shown). An articulated plate (9) is mounted for sliding movement on guides (10), and is pushed therealong by piston (11). <IMAGE>
