A multi-stage compressor is specified which has a high-pressure reservoir which is arranged downstream of its final compressor stage and the outlet of which can be connected to a consumer such as a filling device. In addition, this multi-stage compressor can also be run in booster operation, in which the outlet of the high-pressure reservoir is connected to the inlet of at least one of the higher compression stages and the outlet of the final compressor stage is connected to the consumer while by-passing the high-pressure reservoir. For the booster operation, a change-over device is conveniently provided which, in an integrated type of construction, contains a valve connected to the outlet of the high-pressure reservoir, a ... to the inlet of the compressor stage intended for the booster operation, a minimum/maximum pressure switch, and a discharge valve. The two valves provided are here conveniently combined to form a multi-way/multi-position valve to which the further components are allocated.
