PURPOSE:To automate connecting work and to execute connection with small loss by sliding the front ends of optical fibers, detecting the front ends by photoelectric sensors and moving the front ends for the distance from the detected position up to the center via an encoder. CONSTITUTION:A glass pipe 1 is held by holders 2, 2 and the photoelectric sensors 7 are disposed at the prescribed distance from the apertures thereof. On the other hand, the tape type optical fibers 4 are held to a holder 5 on a sliding plate 51 and are moved by a motor 52. The motor 52 is once stopped when the photoelectric sensors 7 detect the front ends of the coated optical fibers 3 sent to this position. The front ends of the coated fibers arrive at the center if the fibers 4 are moved by the prescribed value for the distance from this position to the central position of the glass pipe 1 by using the encoder 53 and are stopped. The right side is operated in the same manner. A matching liquid is thereafter injected in a central slit 12 and the automatic optical coupling is formed. |
