PURPOSE:To obtain a gradation printer capable of temperature compensation and gammacompensation data for a reference heat content at reference temperature by determining a pulse width correction factor using both the estimated value of a heat content near the heat generating element base of a thermal head and the estimated value of temperature near the printing head base, and correcting the temperature. CONSTITUTION:The sum of a temperature increase due to the heat content of a thermal head base 3 and the ambient temperature of a thermal head 27 is measured as thermal head base temperature by a temperature detection device 25, and a temperature increase due to the heat content of a heat generating element substrate 2 by applied energy is estimated by a heat content estimation device 24 using the applied energy, for each line of the thermal head 27, which is calculated by a pulse width integration device 23. Then a pulse width correction factor for the correction of any adverse effects of the heat contents of the thermal head base 3 and the heat generating element substrate 2 as well as an ambient temperature upon a recording density is determined for each line by a correction factor determination device 26. Then the pulse width of a following line is corrected using this correction factor. In addition, the content of a table for a gamma correction device 20 is determined under reference heat content conditions at a reference temperature. |
