PURPOSE: To lap a magnetic transducer to a predetermined height by arranging a controlling means controlling a degree of lapping for each element in a row according to a resistance value of a magnetoresistive element while an edge is lapped for deciding the height and a stopping means stopping lapping when the element reaches the predetermined height. CONSTITUTION: A resistance value based on a magnetoresistive element is found by means of a multiplexer 28 and a measuring means 30. The measured value is stored in a controller 32 and used as an indication value of the obtained magnetoresistive element height for a transducer 12 in a polishing process, and a substrate row is held in the even plane to the lapping board 26, so that all the magnetoresistive elements can be lapped to the same height. Subsequently, when the magnetoresistive elements are lapped to the predetermined height, commands to separate the substrate row 10 from the lapping face are given from the controller 32 to actuators 20, 22, 24, and then, the lapping process is finished. |
