The invention relates to a machine for manufacturing plates having characters in relief, such as vehicle numberplates. This machine comprises: - a carousel 10 formed by two circular plates 12, 14 positioned in horizontal planes; - a series of punches 24 on which all the commonly encountered characters are engraved, one per punch; - a series of dies 36 on which the same characters as on their respective punches are engraved, but in relief; and - a press 40 mounted in a stationary position relative to the carousel and capable of striking one punch at a time. <IMAGE>
