: Method of manufacturing optical waveguides. In a method in which compact glass layers are directly produced on the inside of a substrate tube from a reactive gas mixture without sintering, a volatile hydrogen-free fluorine compound is added to the mixture of the reaction gases during the whole duration of the manufacture of glass layers. As a result of this a low OH addition absorption is reached.
