PURPOSE:To prevent coloring while voltage is off and to improve contrast by allowing the dyes having a complementary color relation with the color of the dyes to be added into the liquid crystals of a guest-host type color liquid crystal display element of a positive display to present on the optical path of the liquid crystal cell. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 2, oriented films 3 as well as mother liquid crystals 4 having negative dielectric anisotropy and dichromatic dyes 5 consisting of red purple dyes are interposed on a pair of glass insulating substrates 1, whereby a guest-host type color liquid crystal display element of a positive display is obtained. Although this display element is blanked out white and is colorless while voltage is off, the element is slightly colored depending upon the conditions of the films 3. In such a case a sheet body 5 colored with the green color having a complementary color relation with the dyes 5 is formed on the surface of the substrate 1. The sheet body may be disposed in any position on the optical path of the display element. By the complementary color of said sheet body, the display element is made colorless while the voltage is off and the display of good contrast from the coloring when the voltage is on is accomplished. |
