A filter unit for circulating water, e.g. in power plant cooling systems, rests on a flange incorporated in the flow line. The head of the tubular flow line insert is covered by a filter unit formed as a domed structure assembled from frusto-conical sections, whose horizontal base plane coincides with the flow line end. In the same plane are the supports for a suction unit which can be oscillated over the filter surface and collects accumulated material from the filter after detachment by a stream of reverse flow water. Gradual passage of the suction unit over the filter surface is produced by an electric motor; a handwheel is used in power failures. The peripheral gaps round the polygonal base section of the filter are blocked by impermeable bridge elements. ADVANTAGE - Structure is relatively cheap to mfr., and of low height.
