<p>A machine for harvesting and drying a standing forage crop comprising in combination a mower (14), a plurality of heated rollers (16) for receiving a flow of crop cuttings (18) conveyed from the mower (14) to squeeze substantial excess moisture and evaporate any remaining excess moisture above a predetermined reference moisture range so that the crop cuttings (18) upon issuance from the heated rollers (16) are ready for bailing immediately. Moisture detecters (26) positioned preferably before and after the heated rollers (16) signal the moisture content of the crop cuttings to a controller (28). The controller (28) can vary the temperature of the heated rollers (16) or vary the residency time of the crop cuttings (18) between the heated rollers (16) or both. In the preferred embodiment the heated rollers (16) are electrically powered induction rollers and a baler (24) is used in combination with the machine.</p> |
