Tetraazaporphyrins of the formula

in which
L<1>, L<2>, L<3> and L<4>, independently of one another, are the radical of a bicyclic, aromatic heterocyclic ring having 1 to 3 identical or different hetero atoms, selected from the group comprising N, O and S, which is optionally substituted, and
R<1> and R<2> are each as defined in the description,
and an optical recording medium containing the novel tetraazaporphyrins.
