<p>PURPOSE: To obtain a fourth gear speed by holding a sun gear of a first planetary gear unit, and driving a second gear unit from the output of a first gear unit and simultaneously putting a rotating element of a second planetary gear unit together under clutch action to rotate both units simultaneously. CONSTITUTION: A fourth gear ratio is obtained by maintaining a forward clutch 110, a direct clutch 98 and an intermediate brake 96 in the engaged state and engaging an accelerating driving brake 74. A sun gear 62 of a gear set 16 is held out of rotation by the brake 74, and a one-way clutch 92 is put in free wheel action for the engagement of the accelerating drive brake 74. In this case, a ring gear 66 and an intermediate shaft 76 are driven at lower speed than a turbine shaft 38 and a carrier 60. Gear sets 18, 20 are arranged in the same state as being in an automatic mode with a third gear ratio. The speed of the output shaft 12 is therefore the same as that of the intermediate shaft 76.</p> |
