PURPOSE:To make it possible to easily select direct or diffused light with a compact constitution depending on the presence of absence of an individual by detecting the presence of the individual within a certain area and on-off controlling the application of a potential to a liquid crystal dimmer element used in a lighting apparatus which dimmer element being capable of controlling transparency. CONSTITUTION:There are provided a human body detection sensor 15 for detecting the presence of an individual in a specified area and having a liquid crystal dimmer element 1 covering the front part of a transparent light bulb 12 and capable of changing the transparency of the bulb, and a dimmer control section 16 for on-off controlling the application of a potential to the liquid crystal dimmer element 1 based on the detection result of the sensor 15. Under the condition of the absence of a human body, the light of the transparent light bulb 12 passes through the translucent liquid crystal dimmer element 1 to illuminate an entire area with diffused light. Under the condition of the presence of a human body, the light of the bulb 12 passes through the transparent element 1 to provide a spot illumination with direct light. This enables selection between the direct and diffused light depending on the presence of an individual with a compact constitution. |
