3-Amino-[1 -benzazepin-2-one-1-alkanoic acid of formula (I), its stereoisomer or its salt is prepd. by the cyclization of a compd. of formula (II) or its ester. In the formulas, RA is -CH-R(R0), RB is - CH-R2(R0), R0 is COR6 or COR7; R6 and R7 are each hydroxy, lower alkoxy, 3-phthalidoxy, amino, lower alkyl, aminoalkyl, aryl, arylalkyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkylalkyl; R2 is H or lower alkyl; R3 and R4 are each H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkanoyloxy, hydroxy, hydrogen or trifluoro methyl; R5 is H or lower alkyl; X is oxo, phenyl or phridil. (I) is useful as an angiotensin conversion enzyne inhibitor.
