摘要 PURPOSE:To decrease the consumption of an ink sheet and to realize low-cost printing by performing gradational recording while dividing each gradation representation picture element in a subscanning direction, and using an ink sheet which has the same hue but different in density level. CONSTITUTION:The product of pitch P1 in a main scanning direction and pitch P2 in the subscanning direction is size representing the gradation, and a fine slit- shaped picture element 4 of P1XP2/3 is formed on a thermal transfer medium as normal paper in single-time thermal transfer recording operation. The picture element 24 is formed at P2/3 pitch on an ink sheet with density D0 while shifting in print position in the subscanning direction to obtain a density pattern having one - three gradations. Then, the same density pattern with one - three gradations is formed on an ink sheet with density D1 over the 3rd gradation on the ink sheet with the density D0, obtaining a pattern with four - six gradations. Consequently, gradational picture elements which have seven-gradation representation including the backgroup of a recording medium is formed.
