In the press roller assembly with a pliable roller, to press or polish paper webs, the angle (alpha) between the axis (al) of the adjustable pliable roller (1) and the axis (a2) of at least one counter roller (2) is adjustable on a plane (c) at right angles to the pressure plane (p). The angle (alpha) between the two axes (a1, a2) is adjusted in steps or continuously to give the required pressure applied by the rollers (1, 2) to the web (3) passing between them. The counter roller (2) is cambered so that an even pressure is applied along the gap between the two rollers (1, 2) on the web (3). Hydrostatic supports (8) are used within the pliable roller (1) with pressure zones (9) charged with a hydraulic medium either individually or in groups, so that they move towards the carrier (6) in the press direction (p). ADVANTAGE - The assembly give a wide adjustment range to the applied pressure, without a roller change. The appts. also polishes the surface of the paper web at the same time.
