901,158. Internal band brakes. NIMTZ, K., and NIMTZ, H., [trading as VOLKMANN & CO.]. March 30, 1961 [April 1, 1960], No. 11836/61. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group IX] A brake for a spinning &c. spindle comprises a wharve and sleeve attached to the spindle, and at least one pair of coaxial rings, the inner one being fast on the sleeve and having an outer periphery eccentric to the spindle axis, the outer one having a similarly eccentric inner periphery embracing the inner ring, and an outer periphery providing the braking surface, means being provided for turning the outer ring on the inner ring to bring the braking surface into contact with the inner surface of the wharve. As shown, two pairs of rings are provided; of each pair, the inner ring 6 is attached at 7 to the spindle sleeve 2, and the outer ring has a part 12 extending into a recess in a rotatable ring 11 which has projections engageable by a member 14 integral with a dish 16 which can be rotated by a handle 17. The eccentricity of the upper pair of rings is diametrically-opposed to that of the other pair; if several pairs of rings are provided, their eccentricities are relatively angularly displaced. A coil spring 18 may be attached to the uppermost inner ring and to the member 14 to return the brake when the handle is released; to hold the parts in braking position, handle 17 may carry a spring-urged pawl 22 engaging ratchet-teeth 23 on a part 24 integral with the sleeve, the ratchet being releasable when a stud 25 is depressed against a spring-stop. To allow for wear of the braking surface, a number of pawls with teeth of different lengths may be provided, the teeth 23 being subdivided ; or a spring may be arranged between the member 14 and one of the projections on ring 11 with which it engages to rotate the ring. |
