The friction force acting between bodies which are movable relative to one another can be reversibly changed if a phase transition is brought about between different thermotropic, liquid-crystalline phases or between a thermotropic, liquid-crystalline phase and the isotropic phase in a compound, located between the bodies, by changing the pressure.
