OPTICAL MEMORY ELEMENT

PURPOSE:To detect recording information with high sensitivity by subjecting a twisted nematic liquid crystal phase reversibly molecular structure changes by light of different wavelengths. CONSTITUTION:A photochromic compd. is dissolved in the twisted nematic liquid crystal of the nematic liquid crystal phase twisted between two sheets of transparent substrates constituting the liquid crystal cell. The structure changes arising from the reversible photoreaction of the photochromic compd. are read out by converting the changes to the changes in the degree of optical rotation of the twisted nematic liquid crystal cell. The recording destruction by the reading out light is, therefore, obviated and the recording information is detected with the high sensitivity.
