PURPOSE:To inexpensively obtain the liquid crystal display element which has the colorless and bright background and has high contrast and wide field angle by disposing an optical delay plate to at least one side of a liquid crystal cell and constituting the element in such a manner that the dependency of the double refractive index DELTAn of a liquid crystal compsn. on wavelength and the dependency of the retardation of the optical delay plate on wavelength show analogous tendencies. CONSTITUTION:This element has the liquid crystal cell 5 consisting of 1st and 2nd substrates 1, 1' disposed to face each other and the liquid crystal compsn. 9 twisted and oriented between the 1st substrate 1 and the 2nd substrate 1' and 1st and 2nd polarizing plates 3, 4 disposed on both sides of the cell 5. At least one sheet of the optical delay plate 10 is disposed between the 1st substrate 1 and the 1st polarizing plate 3 or between the 2nd substrate 1' and the 2nd polarizing plate 4. The element is so incorporated the dependency of the retardation of the plate 20 on wavelength and the dependency of the double refractive index of the compsn. 9 on wavelength exhibit analogous tendencies.
