PURPOSE:To eliminate the need of specular polishing of both end faces of an optical fiber and an optical waveguide by irradiating the end face of a core layer having a high refractive index through which a light beam is propagated of an optical waveguide by laser light, and providing a hole for connecting the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:With respect to an optical waveguide 10, end faces 5-1-5-4 of a core layer 3 are irradiated by CO2 laser light, and a hole 7 for connecting an optical fiber 8 is made on the end faces 5-1-5-4. Subsequently, the tip of the optical fiber 8 consisting of a core 81 and a clad 82 is inserted into the hole 7, and the optical fiber 8 and the optical waveguide 10 are welded and connected by the CO2 laser light. Since the hole 7 is made on the end face of the core layer 3 for propagating a light beam so as to obtain the maximum coupling efficiency and the optical fiber 8 is inserted into this hole 7, there is no possibility of an optical axis misalignment, and the connection can be executed with a low connection loss. Also, it is unnecessary to polish both the end faces of the optical fiber 8 and the optical waveguide 10 to a specular state. |
