The prosthesis comprises a femoral piece 2 onto which a head 3 is intended to be fixed. The high part 2a of the femoral piece 2 has an outwardly convex profile connecting with the low part 2b through a profile with a point of inflexion 9 followed by an outwardly concave zone 10. The zone of the point of inflexion is such that it lies in a ratio of the distance between the top S of the femoral piece 2 and the point of inflexion 9, on the one hand, and the distance between the top S and the low part 2b limited by the line T, on the other hand; this ratio lying between 1.8 and 2.1. This femoral piece is almost completely covered with a layer of ceramic granulations intended to produce better fastening in the bone tissue of the femur. This prosthesis is intended to be fitted using an instrument 31 with a contour identical to that of the femoral piece 2, but with dimensions exceeding that of the femoral piece 2. This instrument nevertheless has the same ratio as described hereinabove. <IMAGE>
