The fine machining of hard bevel gears is performed - apart from the inaccurate process of lapping - by hobbing with carbide tools or by grinding. The first-mentioned method is relatively expensive and often brings problems in the development of the tooth bearing (contact pattern). Grinding is a very economical method but ground bevel gears tend to excite noise. In order to exploit the advantages of grinding but avoid the excitation of noise, the invention pairs a carbide-toothed wheel with a ground wheel.
