Coke is prepd. by dispersing a carbonised prod. with ave. aspect ratio of at least 1.5 in a raw material oil and coking themixt. USE/ADVANTAGE - The coke is esp. for making artificial C prods., e.g. graphite electrodes or C brushes, esp. needle coke used largely as particulate C material for electrodes. Graphite electrodes are used in steel prodn. The coke has high strength. Needle coke shows no swelling even on baking at high temp., thus avoiding cracks, and can be used for artificial C and prods. with high density and strength.
