The variable inductance has the primary winding and the control winding arranged w.r.t. the magnetic core so that the AC and DC currents induce in the first of the three limbs an AC and DC magnetic flux that adds or substracts depending on whether the AC current is positive or negative respectively. This current induces in the second limb an AC and DC magnetic flux that substracts or adds depending on whether the current is positive or negative respectively. The DC magnetic flux induced in each of the first and second limbs has a magnitude that varies with the magnitude of the DC current so as to vary the impedence of the primary winding.
