PURPOSE:To ensure a large operation area and to decrease the frequency of the occurrence of abnormalities such as jam by shortening carriage paths in a scanner part and a sorter part. CONSTITUTION:When a sort processing is not executed, a disk top type scanner part 1 carries a document loaded on a hopper base 11 upward by carriage paths 10A and 10B and the document after a reading processing is sent inversely to a movable pocket table 12A or fixed pocket tables 12B and 12C. When the sort processing is executed, the document loaded on the hopper base 11 is carried upward by the carriage paths 10A and 10B, and after that, sent to a paper discharge opening 1a by an upper carriage path 10C. When a sorter part 2 receives the document discharged from the paper discharge opening 1a of the scanner part 2 from a paper feed opening 2a provided opposite to the paper discharge opening 1a, it sends the document to a pocket through the upper part of a sorter pocket table 21 by carriage paths 20A and 20B.
