The antenna of a magnetron radiates microwave energy into a waveguide and from there, via the power feeding port in the metal wall, into a cylindrical resonance cavity. At least a part of the wall surface of the resonance cavity is composed of a light transmitting metallic mesh which is formed so that the sum of the three-dimensional angles, formed by a line from a point within the electrodeless discharge lamp, to the mesh, is 2 steradians or more. The quartz envelope of the lamp is supported from a wall and contains mercury and a rare gas.
