METHOD OF MOLDING EMBOSS TYPE GASKET

PURPOSE: To align a bead and an embossment accurately by applying a relatively incompressible elastomer sealing material against one of two major surfaces of a gasket body with sufficient pressure and in a manner deforming both of the major surfaces so that an embossment is defined there encircling a hole and comprising a projection and an indentation. CONSTITUTION: A gasket body 12 is disposed between opposed and relatively displaceable surfaces 46 and 48 of dies 42 and 44 so as to be formed thereon with an embossment 30 placed in position. A major gasket surface 14 from which the embossment 30 projects is placed face-to-face with the die 44 with an indentation 50. A relatively incompressible fluid elastomer material is applied against another major gasket surface 16 on the opposite side of the indentation 50 through a runner opening 52 with relatively high pressure. This high-pressure application of the sealing material deforms relatively small areas of the planes of both major surfaces 14 and 16, or curves the gasket body 12 down into the indentation 50, to produce the embossment 30 encircling an opening 22. The sealing material then remains there as a bead 36 that fills an indentation 34.
