Disclosed are novel 2-pyrrolidone derivatives (I): (I) (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl, a lower alkoxy or a lower alkynyl group or a group of the formula: -(CH2)n - X (VIII) wherein X represerlts a phenyl or a hydroxyl group or a group of the formula: (IX) wherein R1 and R2 may be the same or different and represent a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; and n represents an integer of 1 or 2). These novel compounds are useful as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antithermic agent.
