An installation for remotely monitoring a vehicle comprises: - a piece of fixed equipment 100 fitted with a coin machine 104, with a push-button 106, with a magnetic card device 108 and with a locking support 102, 103, - a mobile device 200, and - monitoring means comprising an ultrasonic detector in the mobile device, a radio link between the mobile device and the piece of fixed equipment, and a link from the latter to a monitoring centre. The user pays, which frees the mobile device and allows him to place it in his vehicle. Actuation of the push-button triggers the monitoring and a coded authorisation card is delivered. On return, the insertion of the coded card turns off the monitoring and the mobile device, brought back from the vehicle to the support, is locked.
