PURPOSE:To attain tracking with finer pitch than a step pitch of a head moving means by utilizing the hysteresis being a difference of head positions depending on the moving direction of the head moving means. CONSTITUTION:A head moving means 3 moving a magnetic head 2 movably in a smaller step pitch sufficiently from a track pitch in the radial direction of a rotary magnetic head 1 and a drive means driving the head moving means 3 are provided to the device. Then a reproduced output at each head position driving the head moving means 3 in the 1st direction in the radial direction and a reproduced output at each head position by driving the means in the 2nd direction opposite to the 1st direction are compared by the drive means and the magnetic head is controlled to put in a position where the output is maximized. Thus, the hysteresis caused due to different moving direction of the moving means 3 is utilized positively and effectively and finer tracking than the step pitch of the head moving means is attained.
