Device for detecting fog

A simple and inexpensive device for detecting fog by means of an optical detector is provided by arranging upstream of the measurement section (4) a preseparator (3) for separating particles larger than ca. 20 mu m. It is possible in this way only for relatively fine particles, i.e. fog droplets, to come into the measuring section (4), where they are detected optically by absorption measurement, measurement of scattered light at the collection of droplets or measurement of scattered light on individual droplets. The device is suitable for controlling fog water collectors or collecting devices for dry deposition. However, it is also possible to use it as a fog warning device on motorways and at airports (see Figure 1 in this regard). <IMAGE>
